Education

Overview

DSC01698Udaipur is one of the poorest districts in Rajasthan and, of its predominantly rural population, the majority live below the poverty line. The area’s socio-economic condition is the primary obstacle to development. The most recent available statistics place the rural literacy rate in Udaipur district at 25.60%. This incredibly low literacy rate is the result of several compounding problems. The severe poverty in the area forces parents to withdraw their children from school at a young age to seek additional income generating activities. Because the children are deprived of even a basic education, they become the next generation trapped in acycle of poverty.

In order to break the cycle of poverty, Mahan Seva Sansthan believes that children have to attend school. MSS was founded in 1989 to help improve education in the rural southern areas of Rajasthan and has not stopped working towards the goal of 100% enrollment throughout MSS’s project area since.  Over the last two decades, MSS has expanded their educational programs to combat other problems they have encountered in the field such as child labor, child marriage, child abuse, and illiteracy.

Strategy

Mahan Seva Sansthan’s guiding educational strategy is the concept of “Sabko Shiksha – Ek Si Shiksha” which means “Education to all – In a uniform pattern.”

Tactics

  • 19Educating children on how to speak up for themselves through their involvement of different collectives like Bal Panchayat, Bal Samuh, Bal Library, Bal Bank etc.
  • Involving community by forming related groups like Yuva Mandal (Youth group), School Development Committee, Gram Vikas Samiti (Village Development Committee) etc. and delegating respective responsibilities to them.
  • Capacity Building of community and related stakeholders
  • Networking with mainstream institutions
