Expriments in Rural Advancement
Background
Udaipur is a poorer district of Rajasthan, with a large tribal population. The economic condition of the rural Udaipur is the main obstacle of the holistic development of the people; maximum people of the rural areas were lives in below poverty line. The extreme climate condition of this district is leads to the improper development of this area. In 1991 census, only 5% of female were literate in the rural Udaipur. MSS was running a non-formal education program in Jhadol block of Udaipur district. During the year of 1991, only 2% of women were literate in this area. The poor education condition is leads to the backwardness of this area. The high rate of illiteracy among the people of this area was the main reason for the poor health and social condition. People did not able to realized about there rights and they had absorbed there poor condition as a part of there normal life. The youth groups of this area also under the dark condition due to the unemployment and illiteracy. MSS had been focus on the educational development through non-formal education of this area. Non-formal education is a process of bridge up those students who are unable to continuing their study due to the poor economic condition and lack of proper social environment.
Geographical area
Mahan Seva Sansthan is operational in tribal districts of Southern Rajasthan. The villages in which the project is running are mostly hilly and remote. Further more the arid, semi arid climates and scarcity of potable water, inadequate rural infrastructure and lack of energy resources are responsible of fragile growth of these tribal villages.
Coverage area
40 villages of 7 Gram Panchayats in Jhadol block, Udaipur District.
Beneficiaries
Through this project MSS reaches approximately 17699 children, 1500 families in 40 villages of 7 Gram Panchayats. However many more peoples within these communities are getting the indirect benefits of various intervention such as awareness generation, capacity enhancement etc.

This project was started in 1994 and running till date.

Objective
- Creating awareness among the masses about education, health, protection and participation
- Ensuring access to free elementary education with 100% retention in government education centers
- Ensuring participation of VEC (Village Education Committee) in managing education programs.
- Sensitizing the community on Holistic Child Rights
- Initiating advocacy with education departments and state government for quality education
- Ensuring birth registration for all new born
- Ensuring regular pre-natal care for all pregnant women and post-natal care for lactating mothers by linking up with government run program
- Ensuring 100% immunization, regular health check ups for all children
- Ensuring safe drinking water to the population
- People to confront any form exploitation
- Establishing linkage of disabled children with relevant government schemes
- Check on the corruption during the famine relief activities taken by the government
- Understanding on various issues among the groups of children.
- Developing a thorough understanding among the children group on the Panchayati raj institution & ensuring their say.

- Organized trainings of Bal Panchayat members, CBOs members, new elected PRI members for strengthening them and developing understanding on child rights issues to work on it

- Organize foot march, protest march, road blocking to stop child exploitation
- Develop a village level Watch Dog Group with the representatives of Bal Panchayats, CBOs and PRI

Outcome
- Reduction in IMR/CMR/MMR through activation of health facilities at working villages
- 100% immunization, Birth and death registration has done through awareness generation and activation of defunct Anganwadi centers
- After capacity building of project staffs and CBOs members on child rights (Right to Survival, Right to Development, Right to Protection and Right to Participation) now they are capable to identify the issues and do advocacy for it to service providers
- In time of migration 3 jeeps consisted of 45 children had been caught by the project staffs and CBOs members to stop child migration and child labor
